Mastiff Newbie? Get this book. November 21, 2008

We bought our first Mastiff puppy at 16 weeks old. Upon bringing her home we realized she is not like any puppy we have ever had. This book gives a very comprehensive overview of the breed and characteristics. We were glad to find that wanting to eat rocks is a Mastiff thing (doesn't say why) but atleast we know we are not alone. The info on training is also helpful for this sensitive breed.

I suspect this is the book available in a pet store; ninety per cent of it could be written for almost any breed of dog. Didn't read carefully, and guess you could say I got superficially skunked. I wouldn't reccommend this book to my dog for chewing, even.

Good but a lot of the information was too basic for me. Most of this information is available through good reputable breeders. In fact, some information that my breeder prefers is contradictory to this book.
I guess this is a good book for those who don't have a good breeder or mentor.
If you are looking for a serious book that is extremely popular with the top breeders in the country ... buy the DeeDee Anderson book. This is a true mastiff owners book. Admittedly, it may be too detailed and for those looking for fluff.
